How to efficiently free disk space on your PC

It has already happened to us: overnight, by downloading and installing anything and everything, your PC saturates and tells you that the free space on your hard drive is running out, and you have to think about cleaning up your files seriously. Yes, but here it is: in front of the immensity of the task, how to free up space quickly and efficiently?

We assume that you are on Windows 10, equipped with the “Fall Creators Update,” which is the 1709 update. The latest Microsoft OS has a lot of efficient features, which allow you to find out what is taking place at the same time. The most space on your PC, but also to automatically clean your hard drive (s) by deleting unnecessary files. We will study two ways of doing things complementary to each other.

The easiest way to get a global view of the disk space left on your PC is to go to the file explorer. It is accessible by the keyboard shortcut “Windows key + E” or by typing “explorer” in the search bar. You will then see all of your storage spaces, with a clear indication of the remaining space. Let's take here as case the “OS (C :)” drive that hosts the operating system. It is crucial always to maintain free space to ensure the proper functioning of the OS. To quickly free up space, first make a right-click on the drive concerned – here, “OS (C :),” so, which can also be called “Windows (C 🙂 -, then click on” Properties.”

In the first “General” tab, click “Clean Disk.” You arrive in a menu that details the different types of files that can be deleted here, and the disk space they occupy. Here, we notice, for example, that the recycle bin contains 13.8 GB of useless files. Check the boxes you want, and Windows will display the saved disk space in real-time.

To validate the operation, all that remains is to press “OK.” The cleaning operation then starts; it is longer or shorter depending on the number of files to delete. In a few clicks, we have recovered here nearly 14 GB of disk space.

This method is unusual if you want to make a room very quickly, without spending time checking what occupies the most space.

If “Temporary Files” can be safely removed, your download folder deserves a little more attention. Whatever your browser, your downloaded files are stored by default in the “Download” section of the file explorer, which can quickly take up a lot of space. Before checking this folder and clicking on “Delete Files,” do not hesitate to check it out to check that there are no files you want to keep. Also note, the “Previous Version of Windows” can take up a lot of space and can be manually deleted via these settings.

Finally, most of the space is generally occupied by applications and possibly video games, if you are a fan of gaming pleasures. It is not uncommon to discover, months later, a vast game installed in the corner of your hard drive, which you do not touch for a long time. In our case, after clicking on “Sort by Size” and “Filter by This PC (C :)”), we discover that Battlefield Beta 1 occupies nearly 8 GB, or that League of Legends goes up to Almost 4.3 GB. To delete a game or an application, nothing more simple: click from above to select it and choose “Uninstall.”
